Alcohol and the COVID Vaccine

Can you drink after getting the COVID vaccine? Research is still in progress on how healthy it is to have a glass of wine or beer after getting your vaccine shot. Part of the challenge is that researchers did not look at alcohol consumption when the vaccine was being tested. This also means that the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has not issued definitive guidelines.

Some countries have adopted a “better safe than sorry” approach to alcohol and the COVID vaccine, recommending not drinking immediately before and after getting a shot. Some medical experts have suggested a window anywhere from three days2 to several weeks.3 However, this is based on the fact that alcohol impairs your immune system more generally. There is no actual hard evidence that a single drink after your shot will reduce the effectiveness of the vaccine.

In summary, if you want to play it safe, you should avoid drinking after the COVID vaccine. But if you stick with moderation, you’ll most likely be perfectly fine.

Alcohol and COVID Recovery

A lot of misinformation has circulated during the COVID-19 pandemic, including some myths around alcohol and recovery from COVID. One popular misconception is that because alcohol-based hand sanitizers kill off the coronavirus on the skin and surfaces,4 alcohol will also kill the virus inside the human body.

This is simply not true. Alcohol does not work the same way inside of us, for the simple reason that alcohol gets diluted in our bloodstream. For most people, a single drink results in a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.01 to 0.03—a fraction of a percent. For alcohol to work as an antiseptic, its concentration needs to approach 60 to 95 percent.5 Common sense tells us this is far beyond a fatal level of alcohol poisoning.

Even though there is no positive link, there are proven negatives to drinking alcohol with COVID. Alcohol consumption can depress your immune system at a time when you want it firing on all cylinders. When you are recovering from a COVID-19 infection, you want to give your body all the help you can. This means avoiding, or at the very least minimizing, alcohol consumption when you have an active infection.

Drinking More During the Pandemic

Statistics related to the pandemic and drinking are stunning. Both men and women are buying more alcohol.6 These purchases are not just sitting on kitchen counters unopened.

One study from 2020 showed a 14 percent jump in frequency of alcohol use among US adults.7 Another survey found 60 percent of people increased their drinking during the pandemic.8 In particular, women increased their heavy drinking days by an average of 41 percent, worsening a pre-existing upward trend in drinking among women. In fact, Ria Health saw a significant rise in women under 40 signing up for online treatment after March 2020.

There are many likely reasons for these increases. COVID-19 has disrupted our sense of normalcy, and fueled feelings of isolation. Many parents are also struggling to manage the stress of working from home, while also supervising school-aged children stuck in the house. In fact, a 2020 study showed stress as a motivation for increased pandemic drinking in nearly 46 percent of respondents.9

Then, there’s boredom. When there is nothing left to watch in your Netflix queue, opening a bottle of wine can seem like an appealing way to kill the time. And, indeed, some research suggests that when people are bored, they are more likely to binge drink.10

So, if you find yourself drawn to quarantine drinking, how much is too much? While there is technically no 100 percent “safe” level of drinking, the CDC recommends no more than one drink per day for women, and no more than two for men.11 If you find yourself consuming more than this on a regular basis, it’s a good idea to check in on your relationship with alcohol.

Can I drink when I have COVID?

Does drinking slow down recovery from COVID?
